Blog, Wiki, and Ning Comparison Chart

Page history last edited by LeAnn Suchy 13 years, 6 months ago

All the information we have show you in MILI is in a wiki, you interact with other teachers in a Ning, and you blog. Here's a comparison chart to help you distinguish between the three. Are there other questions you would like answered about these tools? Let us know.

Also, here is another comparison chart that is longer and compares blogs, wikis, and Google Docs.

  BLOG WIKI NING
What is the main purpose of this site? A platform where users can voice their opinions. A website you can create with others. A place to interact with those of like mind. Nings are available for almost anything you can imagine.
In MILI how are we using this? You'll blog your thoughts and experiences in MILI in a blog. Your blog is in the MILI Ning. What you're looking at right now is the MILI Wiki. This is where all the content we'll deliver to you will be. This is like our "textbook." You'll interact with all the other MILI participants in the MILI Ning. You'll be blogging and responding to forum discussions there. This is like our "teacher's lounge."
Can I use this to collaborate with others? Blogging is more about sharing your personal thoughts, but you can create a blog where multiple users post entries. Wikis are all about collaboration. You can add other users to your wiki and allow them to have varying levels of control. It depends upon your level of collaboration. There are Forum discussions and you can also upload items.
Can I upload and edit documents (like Word, Excel, PPT) in this program? No. In most blogging services you can't upload documents. You can upload documents, but they're like attachments and can't be edited within the wiki. You can upload documents, but they're like attachments and can't be edited within the Ning.
Can I upload multimedia (pictures, audio, video)? Yes Yes Yes
What are the privacy settings like? Usually, depending upon the blogging service you use, you can choose who sees the blog - just you, select people, or anyone. You have control over who sees what in your wiki. You can have the whole wiki open to everyone or have things locked down. It all depends upon the Ning you join. Some Nings are open to everyone and some have to approve members. In every Ning there are select settings for what you personally allow, though, and if you create your own Ning you have more privacy controls.
